Skooter Girl DARIELLE MAC 9781457552373 Books

Darielle Mac’s Skooter Girl is a great book not just for YA readers and fans of graphic novels but for almost all speculative fiction fans. The world is well-developed, the characters come in a wide range of personalities and backgrounds, and the illustrations are vivid and beautiful. I truly could not put it down until I finished all 80 pages (which, as it turns out, don’t take that long to get through).

Amber is an ordinary girl on the brink of womanhood. Well, mostly ordinary, except for the fact that she lives on a small mythical island called Tir Na Nor (roughly translated to magic Isle) and has the “magic touch” when it comes to music and plants. On the day of her sixteenth birthday, the revelation of a big surprise from her father leaves Amber with a choice to make: stay and follow the path her father has set for her future, or explore the world and find her destiny herself.

With the help of family, old friends, and new friends, Amber sets out to begin a new chapter in her life filled with adventure, mystery, and secrets buried deep in her family’s past. What curveballs will Amber’s new life throw at her? Will she discover the truth behind her identity and her family’s history? And what in the world is happening to the wine grapes of Colorfulnation?

The world which Mac creates gripped me from page one; from selkies to robots, an inventor to a prophetic music teacher, both the concepts and the characters of this short illustrated novel are as diverse as you’d expect to see in real life. I wish that more of this diversity had been shown in the races and ethnicities of the characters, but there’s only so much that can be done in 80 pages (and islands as small as Tir Na Nor aren’t normally known for their diversity). I was captivated by the magic and the magical creatures Mac introduces, and I can’t wait to find out more; I was actually disappointed that the book ended when it did. I wanted to learn more about Amber, Tir Na Nor, Colorfulnation, everything about the world of Skooter Girl—fortunately for me, “to be continued” means another book is forthcoming.

Of course, this means that the ending is quite the cliffhanger. While I was disappointed with that, it also makes me excited to read the next book, and I’m certain that other fans of this genre will feel the same. However, if you don’t like suspenseful cliffhangers, this book might not be for you.

All in all, this book is lighthearted and beautifully illustrated. Young adults will really relate to the coming-of-age story, and science fiction/fantasy stories will love all the fantastical elements. I highly recommend it, especially if you need a quick, fun read to pass the time.

Skooter Girl DARIELLE MAC 9781457552373 Books Reviews

The author, Darielle Mac is an international playwright and screenwriter who although primarily has written for the theatre and film has also worked for many great names. She lives in Southwest United States, France and Los Angeles, where when not writing she enjoys a variety of hobbies including falconry, gardening, her dogs, running, biking and sailing.

To compliment her first YA story the author has chosen Dell Barras to be the illustrator of this incredible graphic novel. Dell Barras is a well-known and talented storyboard artiste, working with Marvel comic books and others.

The idea for this outstanding new novel was inspired by the author’s personal adventures, and fuelled by a gift by the inventor of a prototype electric skooter – thus Skooter Girl was born!

The story is set on a remote mystical island called Tir Na Nor which is in a chain of islands in the North Sea. It is Amber’s 16h birthday, and excitedly she arrives at the Dagda’s Academy of Healing Arts, Music and Higher Learning where her dad is a teacher.

At 16 she is an adult and her father expects her to follow in his footsteps, however she doesn’t want to have a normal life. Recently secrets have been revealed to her, opening her eyes to new and exciting things. She doesn’t want to conform or settle down, she want to see the world, and have great experiences. So, being a typical teenager she decides to run away.

This is a wonderfully entertaining coming of age story. The characters are fantastic and it was lovely to read that it is being made into a film. I look forward to reading many more of Amber’s adventures in the future.
Darielle Mac’s young adult graphic novel “Skooter Girl” is an enchanting ride that sweeps you off your feet and into the colorful, vast world of the imagination. Together with illustrator Dell Barras, the author has constructed a fantastic story about a heroine named Amber from the Magical Isle of Tir na Nor. This Young Adult (YA) graphic novel is a simple tale about a modern teenager, who upon reaching her 16th birthday and faced with a future carved out by others, decides to trade in the arranged, traditional course in life for an independent journey in search of her true destiny. Although Amber’s journey away from home is fraught with great peril, mystery, danger and surprise, she is ultimately victorious in charting her own path in life. That road, navigated with the help of some magic on a kind of robotic motorcycle, is both thrilling and fulfilling. Amber becomes something of a “super hero” on wheels, and it marks the debut of an exciting new name in YA graphic fiction.

Darielle Mac who has written for the theater and film in the past, was inspired to write “Skooter Girl” after she was gifted with her own “skooter” by an inventor and proceeded to see the wide world, exploring the backroads and byways of foreign lands on wheels. The plot (along with amazingly imagined illustrations) of the often mysterious characters (human and otherwise) Amber must contend with, come from the vast imagination of Darielle Mac and illustrator Dell Barras. On her journey, Amber uses her talents and wits to survive many ordeals, including a near shipwreck, and a series of other close calls. Young adult readers will relate to Amber’s “coming of age” predicaments, choices and challenges, including romance and ultimately the search for her true heritage.

“Skooter Girl” is never predictable and full of positive, progressive messages for the young adults who will read this extremely accessible graphic novel. Rendered in easy to understand and brief, episodic chapters, Amber’s adventures and heroics on her “skooter” are captivating, inspiring and never dull. Fraught with incredible suspense and danger, this auspicious debut by Darielle Mac is both highly accessible and wonderfully conjured. “Skooter Girl” is guaranteed to blow your mind and speed you away. Five stars!
