The Ring and the Crown Melissa de la Cruz Books
*I received this book as an eARC from the publisher on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*I heard so much hype about the book even before it was released. Melissa de la Cruz has an awesome presence on social media. She posted a lot of cool pictures on Instagram with fans and fellow authors wearing flower crowns. Although I did really enjoy this book, it unfortunately did not meet up to all the hype.
This book is one of those books where the synopsis gives way too much away. I wish I hadn't read the synopsis on goodreads before starting the book.
I heard this book compared to a YA Game of Thrones, but the amazing characterization and complexities found in George R.R. Martin's epic are not present here. There is the royal court intrigue. There also is the magic, but there isn't that realness and depth that makes me want to try and read a 1,000 page book in one night. I didn't really connect with any of these characters and there were too many. It seems to be the popular thing right now to have a lot of different perspective characters, but it takes a lot of work to get that many characters across. With so many characters, I think this book would make an excellent tv show. It would be like Downton Abbey meets Game of Thrones except with a The CW vibe. There are so many romantic pairings that seem obvious from their introductions.
Although I didn't connect with the characters, I absolutely loved the world building. The alternate history world where magic exists is what kept me reading. I always like when an alternative history takes some more modern moral stances on social issues. I enjoyed that de la Cruz included queer characters. I also liked that the chapters were very short. I always seem like I read a book faster when the chapters aren't 20 pages long.
The last 5% of the book is a dump of reveals. It didn't flow well for me.
I have heard that this is the first in a series, but it definitely can stand alone. I don't know if I will be interested in a sequel unless it is set further in the future and showcases the next generation. I felt everything, although dumped all at once, was tied up nicely in the end.
Although I didn't connect with the characters, I did enjoy the concept of this book and the world de la Cruz created. I would absolutely watch this as a tv series. Oh, I forgot to mention the pop culture quotes. I loved them! It's always cool when an author connects modern pop culture with an alternative history fantasy. I give this novel a 3.5/5. I do recommend it to fans of fantasy YA, but stay away from synopses! And don't expect something as amazing as Game of Thrones. I think the hype is what might have ruined the book for me.

The Ring and the Crown Melissa de la Cruz Books Reviews
it is a well written book it combines the stories of several characters and intertwines them together somehow
This book was all over the place, way too many things going on at once, I couldn't discern a plot at all and the ending was mediocre at best. I felt nothing for these characters, nothing at all.
a good read!
I picked up the Ring and the Crown expecting a historical-kind of fantasy novel with an open mind because 1. the blurb sounds interesting and 2. the cover looks amazing. It starts off quite interesting with one of FIVE narrators, and from there, it goes downhill. This book is basically all about a bunch of teens wanting to either get out of marriage or to marry. Everyone is pushed to marry the person they don't wish to and basically it's just a reality tv show that happens in the past.
Now, the two characters that didn't bug me were Aelwyn, the daughter of the Merlin, and Wolfgang, Prince of Purrusia. Although the two have their flaws, they are the most tolerable. We have the American socialite Ronan, who just wishes to become someone in London, Isabelle, a would-be French princess with a sad life, and Marie, the princess of England. Although they sound interesting, they lack a lot of character quirks and arcs. I was definitely let down by this book and I really hoped it would be better.
Loved it! I was not expecting to like it, but I quickly got caught up in the drama and twists of the tale. Lots of details and vivid magic, plus enjoyable characters. I am glad I read it!
De la Cruz weaves together historical time periods, historical figures, and fantasy in this enthraling debut to a new series. It is a must read for anyone who loved Frozen, and the Blue Bloods, as well as anyone who enjoys historical fiction and dystopia. Five stars for sure, this books will leave you dying while waiting for the next book to come out.
Melissa De La Cruz is one of my favorite authors and I loved The Blue Blood Series and I loved Frozen but with The Ring and The Crown I was not invested as I would have liked to be. The historical aspect of the story was neat and learning about how things were back then compared to how things are now and even how things were in America compared to how things were in France and England. I really did like Wolf, Awelyn, Maria and Ronan's characters. I thought that they were the selfless and caring characters. Everyone else it was all about them especially Isabelle, however I did feel bad for her at the end. I liked how this book wasn't a happily ever after for the characters but they had closure and happy endings that helped them better their lives. It took me a while to read this and over all I found it slow moving and a little boring. But I did enjoy the end. If you like Melissa's others books you may like it.
I would first love to say that I am a huge Melissa de la Cruz fan! I have been with her since Blue Bloods and when I found this book I was not disappointed! So many stories of characters you either love and want more of or pity, but want the best for. I hung on every word to see how all of these stories would intertwine and was not disappointed! Though some of their stories I would not have chosen for myself I did enjoy and respect that sometimes you cannot chose the path just for you, but for those you are in charge of.
