One of the best stories I've ever read. If memory serves, Greg Bear wrote this while in college. As great as he is - certainly one of the best Hard SF writers of our times - his later books rarely exceed this, along with the sequel (not as good), his only attempt at fantasy. The world he creates is amazing. So are the beings who occupy it. The story is fabulous. Sadly, the title has become hard to find. If you manage to get one, hang onto it. You'll re-read it again in several years. Guaranteed.

I have been a Bear fan for quite some time. This book will keep you rvited to your seat. Without giving too many details, I was pulled into the Realm and stayed there until the last page.
Bear really knows how to paint a picture and keep you there.
Greg Bear has written many classic SF novels (Eon, Eternity, BloodMusic) but this fantasy novel and its sequel, The Serpent Mage, are two of his most assured and inspired works.
For anyone who likes their Celtic myths dark, cold and inhuman - this is the book for you. Fascinating read!
More fantasy than sci fi but very good. I will read the follow up book Serpent Mage. Greg. Bear is very versatile.
Greg Bear is one of the most original speculative fiction writers out there. Oddly enough this book and it's companion "The Serpent Mage" may be one of his most traditional story lines. But he still brings all of his originality to this story and makes it all his own.
This a good fantasy novel for teens who are interest in the fey and poetry. However it is slow. The hero is the only totally fleshed out character and all other characters are there to provide background, villains, or teachers.
Book didn't keep my interest, at all. Characters didn't make me feel any empathy for them (which is hard for me; I empathize with people in commercials,) plot moved slowly, and the world-building felt dull and inconsistent. (Not with errors or anything, just with tone and feel.) Only one person's opinion, of course, but as much as I tried to push through it, I had to put it down, which is pretty unusual for me.
